Other Interests

There’s lots of things I enjoy apart from chemistry so he’s a page for a few of them, for those who are interested! My main interests are Linux, Science Fiction and Mudding.

Linux

At the moment I am using Sabayon linux. It’s based on gentoo but is much easier to install. If you have a good video card you can use Beryl, a 3d windows manager with some stunning visual effects which won’t hog your resources. Check out this video or watch it below. Linux has come a long way in the last year and is now much easier to use. Live cd’s are available so you can boot up linux and check it out without disturbing your main operating system. Here’s a list and download links for all of them.

Mudding (multi-user dungeon..ing)

Mudding has a long history. It is derived from the old text based adventure games but is much more involved and multilayered. Why would anyone play a text based game when there are graphical games to play? There are many answers to this quetion but the reason I like it is because it’s much more interesting. One way of looking at it is to compare reading a book with watching a movie. When you read a book you use your own imagination, when you watch a movie you see what the director of the movie imagine. One of the great things about a mud is being able to interact with players from all over the world, for free and without any fancy computer equipment. I am involved withe some fellow mudding addicts in building a new mud. It’s based on time travel and starts in the ancient world. It is very much in the early stages as yet as we are in the process of rewriting the code base. There are few players as we are not advertising it at the moment but check out our web site here if you’re interested.

Web Design
I’ve recently begun designing web sites and hosting them on my own server. My site is still a work in progress and may change frequently while I decide on a theme! I’m working on a site for a local excursion company and have completed a site for my son’s business in England. I’m using wordpress for the sites (the same software that this site is running on) to make the sites easy for the owners to update and add to. This seems to be a growing trend in the web site building world as HTML (hyper text mark up language) is not easy to use and utterly impossible for non- computer geeks! I also designed the pre-med web site which we are currently adding content to!
